A 90-minute deep work block is the smallest unit of serious focus that’s worth setting up for. It’s long enough to finish something real, short enough that your brain doesn’t revolt, and it lines up with your body’s natural attention cycle. Here’s exactly how to run one.

Before you start: pick ONE outcome

Don’t sit down to “work on the report.” Sit down to “write the first draft of the intro and section one.” A block needs a finish line you can actually cross.

Write the outcome on a sticky note or a single line at the top of your doc. If you can’t state it in one sentence, the task is too vague — break it down first.

A block without a defined outcome isn’t deep work. It’s just sitting at your desk with the lights on.

Step 1: Clear the runway (2 minutes)

Friction kills blocks before they start. Remove it in advance:

  • Open every file, tab, and document you need — then close everything else.
  • Put your phone in another room. Not face-down. Another room.
  • Fill a glass of water and set it next to you so you don’t get up.

Step 2: Set a 90-minute timer

Step 3: Start ugly

Real emergencies will find you. Almost nothing else is urgent on a 90-minute timescale. If you’re worried something is, tell one person “I’m heads-down until 3pm, message me if it’s actually on fire.” Now you’ve outsourced the monitoring.

Step 5: Stop when the timer ends

This sounds backwards, but stopping on time protects tomorrow’s block. If you grind for three hours, you’ll dread the next session. End on a high note, ideally mid-task so you know exactly where to pick up.

Before you leave the desk, write one line: “Next: finish section two.” Tomorrow’s start becomes frictionless.

Step 6: Take a real break

Your brain just spent its best fuel. Don’t immediately pour it into a screen.

  • Walk for 10–15 minutes, ideally outside.
  • Don’t scroll — that’s not rest, it’s a different kind of load.
  • Get more water and a snack if you need one.

A proper break is what lets you run a second block later in the day without it feeling like punishment.
